ANTH/SOCI412: Slavery and Human Trafficking

Writing assignment 3 – guidelines

TOPIC:

For this third writing assignment, you are invited to provide a well-documented and original reflection of some practical actions taken by academics, policy makers, and/or associations to end contemporary forms of slavery and human trafficking. Considering the complexity and numerous facets of this issue, how do people attempt to uncover, reveal, and tackle it?

Your essay should use elements of class lectures and/or discussions to critically analyze these actions, their context, and their significance. Questions that you might want to address include: what drives people to fight against human trafficking? What understanding do they have of the issue, and what do they identify as the most efficient way(s) to fight it?

FORMAT AND DEADLINE:

Your essay should be 7 pages long, double-spaced (not including the title and/or the cover page).

Sources:

  • Your assignment should include a list of five sources, three of which should be peer-reviewed. Acceptable non peer-reviewed sources include newspaper articles as well as websites such as humantrafficking.org, stophumantraffickingmo.com, notforsalecampaign.org, historiansagainstslavery.org.
  • In addition to the five sources, your essay should build on two interviews conducted with local activists (from the Central Missouri Stop Human Trafficking Coalition, MU’s stop traffic student group, or another local group). Based on open-ended questions (questions that cannot be answered by yes or no), the interviews should explore the particular trajectories of the interviewees’ engagements.

This writing assignment is due on December 9th. You will give a 5-10 minutes oral presentation of your project during the last week of class.
